The Design Secrets of Medieval Castles

Medieval Castles were more than just large fortresses with massive stone walls. They were ingeniously designed fortifications that used many brilliant and creative ways to protect their inhabitants from attacking enemies.

A lot of thought, ingenuity, and planning went into the design of Medieval Castles. Everything from the outer walls to the shapes and location of stairwells were very carefully planned to provide maximum protection to the inhabitants. Here are some of the unique and lesser-known secrets of medieval castle designs.

The Moat - A moat, which is a body of water that surrounds a castle, is often thought of as a water obstacle that had to be crossed; but this wasn't the primary function of a moat. One of the biggest concerns of the inhabitants of a medieval castle or fortress was the fear that an invading army would dig tunnels under the fortification. This tunneling could either provide access to the castle or cause a collapse of the castle walls. A moat prevented this because any tunnel under the moat would collapse and fill with water. It was a very effective deterrent against tunneling. Often times the moat wasn't even on the outside of the castle. It was on the inside between the outer wall and the inner wall.

The Design Secrets of Medieval Castles

Concentric Circles of Defense - This was an extremely effective method of defense for the inhabitants of a Medieval Castle. It was a series of obstacles that started on the outside of the castle and worked their way in. It was usually a progression like a cleared field, an outer wall, a moat, an inner wall, a keep and then a strong hold tower. An attacking army would have to overcome each of these obstacles one at a time. And this took a lot of time and effort to do.

The Main Gate as a Death Trap - The main gate of a castle was often the most dangerous place in the castle because it was also a deadly trap. It often opened into a small courtyard that had another main gate at the far end. The forward main gate often had an iron portcullis that was held in the open position and if the main gate was broken through and attackers made it into the small courtyard the portcullis was brought down and the attackers were trapped in the small courtyard. The walls of the courtyard had small holes called death holes where the defenders could fire arrows and other projectiles at the trapped attackers.

The hidden secrets of Stairwells - Stairwells were often very carefully designed in Medieval Castles. Stairwells that curved up to towers often curved very narrowly and in a clockwise direction. This meant that any attackers coming up the stairs had their sword hands (right hand) against the interior curve of the wall and this made it very difficult for them to swing their swords. Defenders had their sword hands on the outside wall, which meant they had more room to swing. Another ingenious design of stairs was that they were designed with very uneven steps. Some steps were tall and other steps were short. The inhabitants, being familiar with the uneven pattern of the stair heights could move quickly up and down the stairs but attackers, in a dimly lit stairwell, would easily fall and get bogged down in the stairwells. This made them vulnerable to attacks and slowed their attacks down significantly.

Secret Passages - What Medieval Castle would be complete without secret passages? Many castles had secret passages and they served a variety of purposes. Some passages were designed to open up a distance from the castle so inhabitants could escape during an attack or get supplies in and out during a siege. Secret passages also led to secret chambers where people could hide, supplies could be kept or a well for water was dug.

A medieval castle was more than just a large glamourous palace with massive stone walls around it. A medieval castle was a structure that was totally designed right down to the last detail with the protection of its inhabitants in mind. If you ever visit a medieval castle and you notice that the stairs are very uneven you will know that it wasn't because the builders couldn't measure out steps evenly. It was just that this is a little secret of the builders of the castle.

Colors: Their Connotations and Perceived Meanings

Throughout the ages, colors have been used to evoke certain emotions, and an examination of the history of color offers fascinating insights into the human condition, as well as showing how different cultures have developed different attitudes about color. Here are a few examples of what various colors have come to represent over the years:

Red

Red has traditionally been associated with courage and love in Western culture, but in China, red is the color of happiness and good fortune. In fact, white has traditionally been the color most preferred for wedding dresses in America, but the Chinese prefer to dress their brides in red.

Colors: Their Connotations and Perceived Meanings

Orange

Orange is considered a warm color, perhaps because it has evoked the feeling of fire, all the way back to mankind's earliest beginnings. Painting walls a subtle orange, leaning toward a warm brown, stimulates the appetite and can reduce tension. However, as the orange color becomes brighter, it begins to take on a high energy feel and can lead to anxiety.

Brown

Brown is another warm and comforting color, stimulating the appetite and actually making food taste better. That makes coffee brown, in all intensities, with or without the cream, an ideal candidate for dining rooms.

Yellow

Since it's always been associated with the sun, yellow has traditionally been considered a cheerful color. Yellow is also the first color most people see in early spring, when the daffodils begin to bloom. However, there seems to be an East/West cultural difference when it comes to yellow. The Chinese revere yellow enough to have considered it the imperial color since the 10th century, yet several Western studies have shown that yellow is many people's least favorite color.

Green

Green is another color that has both an up and down side. It's associated with the new growth of spring, prosperity, and clean, fresh air, yet it can also carry a negative connotation, in terms of mold, nausea, and jealousy. Throughout the ages, green has most often been considered to represent fertility, and during the 15th century, green was the most popular choice of for the wedding gowns of European brides.

Blue

Because it's associated with the color of the sea and the sky, blue has come to symbolize serenity and infinity. That's especially true of the more greenish shades of blue, such as aqua and teal. On the other hand, cooler shades of blue can have a tendency to cause feelings of sadness.

Purple

Over the millennia, purple has been associated with royalty in Western civilizations, due to the difficulty and expense involved in producing purple dye, which was made from a particular species of mollusk shell. Even today, when purple can be produced just as inexpensively as any other color, the use of purple is still considered to represent elegance and sophistication.

There are stories and connotations for every color, and different cultures assign different meanings to colors. For instance, American brides generally prefer white wedding dresses, while many Asian cultures dress their brides in black, reserving white for funerals. But regardless of what culture on is from, one thing is certain: colors will always have effects on human beings and should be carefully considered when decorating a home.

Characteristics of Good Web Design

There are so many different platforms out there for running and administering a website that good web design basics sometimes get lost in the shuffle. Good web design has some characteristics that make it usable and attractive at the same time and, by knowing what they are, you can be sure you're getting the best for your website.

Information and Organization

Good web design is characterized by having a logical ordering of elements that make it easy for users to get through the site and to the information that they need. All the bells and whistles aside, the Internet is still all about information. If you have sloppy navigation and if it's hard to figure out where your menus lead, then you do not have good web design.

Characteristics of Good Web Design

Every page within your site should have a point and those pages that do not should be eliminated. One hallmark of bad web design is adding pages just to have them there. Each page should offer something to anyone who visits it. Some pages are best combined with others. For instance there's no reason to have your About Us page separate from your Contact page if your contact information is just a phone number and an email address.

Your page should also have persistent navigation options. This means that your visitor can always go back to the page that they were just at by clicking a link or go back to the homepage from any page within the site. There should be no dead ends on a well-designed website!

Graphics and Media

Good web design incorporated media intelligently, not gratuitously. This means that videos have to be clicked before they load and play but that there is a still frame that shows what they are. It also means that people have a way of turning slideshows on and off, muting or turning music on and so forth. There shouldn't be so much graphic content on the page that it slows down people's computers when they visit the site. This is the best way to make people want to go somewhere else and it makes your site look amateurish.

Integration

Good web design will oftentimes integrate several web services onto your site. For instance, it's normal to have social bookmarking icons on just about every site these days to make sure that people can "share" a site without any real effort. This encourages people to give your site a social networking endorsement.

There are plenty of other services, such as photo hosting services, that can be integrated into personal and business websites, as well, and these can offer quite a bit of fun functionalities. This means that your site is more than the sum of its parts. Good web design has a way of making your site into an experience that is fun for the visitor, that makes information easy to find and that presents exactly the image you want to anyone who happens to find your spot on the web. Good web design can make your business or personal content shine!

Online Bedroom Design: A Creativity Exercise

Are you planning on having a house built? Are you planning a renovation on the current place you are living in? Are you planning on getting a vacation home somewhere in your favorite vacation spot? If yes is the answer to any of these questions, you might want to explore the idea of designing a bedroom of your house in advance.

You might want to do it so that it reflects your personality, or perhaps to just find out how creative you can be. You can do it even if you are not an architect or an interior designer; you don't even need to hire one to do it for you. You can do this yourself, and all you need is a computer, Internet, and an imaginative mind. Yes, you can design a bedroom online.

There are websites out there that specifically deal with online bedroom design. They usually have previews for you to take a look at so you would have an idea on how to go about it. Or, if you are really prepared and would want to do it yourself, that is a legitimate option too. There are three important steps on how to design a bedroom online.

Online Bedroom Design: A Creativity Exercise

First, you need to see the color combinations you will use. Maybe you would like your room to be painted in blue. What shade of blue? There are hundreds of color combinations of shades of blue. Online bedroom design websites usually offer this option so you can mix and match which paint colors to use. You can also check to see the color combination of the walls with the flooring, ceiling, furniture, so you can have a "color preview" of what your bedroom will look like.

Next is the layout design. How big will your bedroom be? Where exactly will you place the furniture and other items such as the television, study table, restroom, doors, windows, and more? How big of the total space will they consume? You can answer all of these by properly designing the layout of your bedroom. If the first step deals with the color combinations, this second step deals with space and measurements. You can check to see how many pieces of furniture you can place and how big they are and if they can fit or not (or if they are ideal or not).

Finally, the design plan itself. Calculate your total expenses by placing all the necessary information in a design plan. Included here are the sizes of the doors, windows, flooring, amount of paint to be used, etc. When you complete these necessities, you will have an idea of how much you will spend for the construction of your bedroom. The design plan is not only important for the calculation of expenses, but also for the exact data of your room - you will know every detail there is.

You might want to venture into designing your own bedroom online. It is a creative exercise and the satisfaction you will receive when the finished product is revealed while knowing that you were the one that designed it cannot be put into words. Whatever your motive is in designing your own bedroom, whether it is to reflect your personality or so you can test your creativity, it will be a fun thing to do. Remember, it is simple enough that all you need is a computer, Internet, and an imaginative mind.

Architect Spa Design Floor Plan - Relax and Chill Out

An architect design floor plan can be found on the internet and in architectural magazines. One set of plans located on the web, Sage Springs Club and Spa, show a luxuriously appointed club and spa. The first floor of this spa/gym has a large luxurious lobby and reception area., a spa and fitness store that sells exercise clothing and various other spa products. Also on level one of this spa are a relaxation lounge, massage therapy rooms, wet room with vicy shower and a pedicure/manicure room.

The second floor of this architectural design spa floor plan has a conditioning room with a glass wall overlooking the tennis court below. This room also has Precor cardio equipment, cybex strength circuit, four screen television theater music channels with wireless headphones. There is also a movement studio for aerobics, yoga and stretch and toning exercises. At every station in this spa, you are treated like royalty. Membership in spas like this are costly, but well wroth the expense.

On the ground level the floor plans show five full size regulation Tennis courts and 3 lane indoor lap pools and spa.

Architect Spa Design Floor Plan - Relax and Chill Out

There are lots of floor plans for different spas and gyms available on the internet. Almost all have some of the amenities of Sage Spring Spa and Club but this one had the most interesting floor plan of them all. Before joining an expensive spa or gym, check the ones you are interested in. Compare services, amenities, and prices before you sign anything.

Floor plans for detached condos are laid out similar to a 'home' not part of a condo complex. One floor plan for a detached condo in Michigan has a large family room,/dining room area, master bedroom with private bath, small kitchen area with an island, a powder room, and second-floor bedroom. There is also a garage on the first floor. A basement which can be finished has the potential for at least two more bedrooms. Detached condos are ideal for people who don't have the time or inclination for yard work. It would also be good for elderly people no longer capable of cutting grass or shoveling snow.

Summer Jobs For 14 Year Olds - 3 Good Paying Jobs to Put Money in Your Pocket For the Summertime

You just turned 14 and just finished your last year of junior high school. This is the last summer before you start high school and you really want to have some fun, but in order to have fun these days you really need to have some money in your pocket and some extra cash saved in your bank account.

The only problem is finding a good job during the summertime which will also allow you to have enough time to enjoy your summer with your family and friends. Many established businesses won't hire 14 year olds simply because they are too young or it would be a legal hassle to do so. With that in mind there are still some very good summer jobs that you can qualify for which can make you some very good money in order for you to have a great time during the summer. In this article we will take a look at a few of these niche jobs.

If you happen to be lucky enough to live along the coastal area than the perfect job for you as a girl or guy would be a lifeguard. As far as summer jobs for 14 year olds, being a lifeguard ranks as probably one of the best jobs that you can get not only because you work in a very fun atmosphere but you also learn how to be responsible, because when you are out there at the beach many people's lives are in your hands.

Summer Jobs For 14 Year Olds - 3 Good Paying Jobs to Put Money in Your Pocket For the Summertime

In order to become a lifeguard you have to take a certification course, plus you also need to prove that you are a more than adequate swimmer. As far as how much you would get paid as a lifeguard it all depends on the state that you live in and whether your area is saturated with lifeguards or not, but generally the range of pay for lifeguards starts at minimum wage and goes all the way up to an hour, but like I said again you need to do some homework and ask around about the pay in your area, but if you're looking for a great job in which you mostly sit around all day and get a great tan than being a lifeguard is just the thing for you.

If however you do not live near a coastal area then it would be better for you to look in other directions for a job as a 14 year old. There are many 14 year olds that are very good when it comes to computer related things, and there are a lot of them that even have their own websites that they have built themselves. If you are also good at something like this then maybe you should do some freelance web design work on the Internet. Even during this very bad economy there is still a great demand for web designers out there and there are thousands of web design related forms in which posters are constantly in need of someone to design a website for them.

This is a niche that you can quickly start making money from and the beauty of web design work is that you can basically set your own hours so that you can do most of your work late at night or early in the morning and still have lots of time to enjoy your summer days. Most freelance web designers during the summertime don't even work over the weekends. Believe it or not, web design work is a very high-paying job and even if you are 14 years old you could still make between 0 and 0 per web design. If you want to turn this into just a part-time summer job you would only need to perform between 5 to 10 web design projects and the money that you will get paid from this will usually last you throughout your summer vacation , and you will probably have some spare money left on the side to go shopping for some new clothes for when you start high school.

There are many ways to prove people wrong when they say that it is very hard to make money at your age, but as I have shown you with a little due diligence there are some great summer jobs for 14-year-olds out there.

Website Functionality Depends Upon Web Design and Development

How well your website works has a lot to do with how well it has been designed and developed. Functionality needs to be built in from the ground up to ensure that each element loads quickly, performs efficiently and keeps all information safe and secure. Talented web developers are accustomed to using the latest technology available in order to design websites that are fast and functional, as well as looking great.

While a great looking website with lots of animation, flash and imagery is great to look at, what's the point in a great looking website if it isn't easy to use? Once the initial show is over, will visitors stay on your site if they can't find what they are looking for? Even worse, what if an element of your site has not been designed properly and breaks, or displays badly across different browsers? Experienced web designers know about these pitfalls and test their designs in a variety of ways to ensure that their sites load quickly and continue to perform well for visitors throughout their whole experience on your site.

Additionally, web functionality covers how well your site performs in the search engines. Good web developers are constantly monitoring the latest updates to good SEO practices and incorporating this knowledge into their design process. For example, special care needs to be taken over the functionality of websites designed with Flash landing pages, as search engines can't penetrate some of these pages. Visitors using certain types of browsers, or accessing your website from a mobile device such as an iPhone should also be able to use your site completely, and your website should be designed with this in mind.

Website Functionality Depends Upon Web Design and Development

Issues with functionality of a website cause thousands of businesses lost customers each day, as visitors click away because one or more areas of the site don't display properly or work the way they should. Imagine if your contact form couldn't be sent? Or if your navigation buttons didn't display and there was no other way for users to know which area of the page to click next?

Poorly designed and badly functioning web sites create a terrible impression of your business, so isn't it worth thinking about these things during the initial design rather than trying to fix them later?

Indoor Railing Designs: How To Add Design To Something Simple

Indoor railing designs are something that many people just do not think about enough. The fact is that the railing is a focal point in any entryway or in any living area. It creates the illusion of movement. Your eye naturally moves up the railing, up the stairs to the top. Therefore, adding a bit more charm and appeal to an interior railing can make for a more dramatic or a more elegant look.

What's It Made From

The design of your railing starts with the type of railing it is. Most are made from wood. If your interior railing is made of wood, or you would like to create one in this manner, consider your wood options. You can consider woods such as pine, oak, cherry and maple. Look at the wood patterns in the wood itself to determine if in fact this is the style of wood that you would like to have. Paying attention to these details can make for a beautiful selection.

Indoor Railing Designs: How To Add Design To Something Simple

You can also have interior railings that are made of steel and iron, if you would like. Or, you can add new textures to a wood railing by adding feet to it that aremade of stone or marble. There are plenty of ways that you can add a different texture to the standard, boring wood railing.

Decorated Railings

To add a lot of class to the wood railing you may have, consider adding to it decorative elements. These can be as sophisticated as you would like them to be, or as simplistic. Look at the various options that are available. These can be attached to various locations on the wood railing to completely transform it. Or, you can also purchase a new wood railing that features detailed carvings and elaborate details.

The shape of the railing is also important. A curved railing or a straight one will work. It is not so much the shape of the railing that you want to consider, but where you want the eye to travel. A straight railing will carry the eye upwards, creating the illusion of height. A rounded staircase and railing keeps the eyes focused on these details.

Adding features to the railing are essential as well. From pedestals that will hold a decorative item to the simple addition of iron work to the posts can make a grand entrance. Design your interior railings based on the features that fit your lifestyle and your designed room look.

Disadvantages of a Website

There are many advantages to having your own website, but in some situations you may not want one, as there are some disadvantages of a website. Depending on what market your are in, or what your style of communication is, you may want to just set up a blog, or stick with other methods of generating an income.

What are the Disadvantages?

Websites take a long time to design. You need to figure out where you want your navigation bar, your list of products or other information, as well as your ads. On top of that you need to figure out a color scheme that will attract your visitors so that they will not be turned off by it, but instead keep coming back. This is rather time consuming, as you may think you got the perfect design, but others may not agree with you. If that happens you basically get to start all over again.

Disadvantages of a Website

To help you with the designing process, you need to either learn HTML, CSS and other essential codes. Or, you can purchase a program known as DreamWeaver, and it will create the codes for you. However, this program can be costly, especially if you are already strapped for cash.

Other costs that are associated with your own website are hosting fees as well as a domain name. However, these fees are quite low and are well worth the price.

You may also need to work with other essential tools to help you create your webpages and then upload them to the internet. CoffeeCup has a very good HTML editor that you can use if you decide to learn the codes yourself. They also have a great FTP Client to help you upload your content to your website.

Now, when you have a blog, you can upload your content to your blog months in advance, but with a website you cannot do this. (Unless there is a program available that I am unaware of).

Another thing to consider about a website is that it requires that you manually link all of your pages together. A blogging software does this for you automatically. Additionally, you may also have to manually update your feeds to let others know about your new content.

Websites usually do not allow users to comment, and therefore if you are looking to interact with your users a blog may be more suitable than a website. However, if you have your own website, you can still have a blog to run along side of it on the same domain, where users can interact.

The Top 3 Problems With Plasma TVs

It's easy to be instantly drawn to a plasma TV screen, especially one that is displaying full HDTV programming. The visual beauty is amazing. And plasma TVs tend to be among the lower cost thin screen technologies that are available today. But there are a few problems inherent to the design and you should at least be aware of them before making a buying decision.

The first is that plasma TVs use inert gases that are illuminated to display colors on the screen. The way that this is accomplished makes for very high contrast, vivid images on the screen, but it also can be affected by high altitudes. If you live above 6,000 - 7,000 feet above sea level, you should know that plasma TVs have to work much harder to produce the same image than they would at lower altitudes. This may not cause an immediate problem, but over time the monitor wears out much faster due to the extra work load. So if you happen to live in high altitudes, just bear this in mind when buying a plasma TV.

The second problem that plasma TVs can exhibit is a susceptibility to screen burn-in. This happens whenever any static image stays on the screen for a very long time and is still faintly visible even when the image changes. It is said to have been "burned-in" to the screen, and can be very irritating to see a ghost pattern still visible as you watch TV. The easy way to avoid this problem with older plasma screens is to make sure that you don't leave the TV on when you are not watching it, and especially when pausing a video game for a very long time. Thankfully though, newer plasma screen TVs have technology built in to address this problem that subtly shifts the image to surrounding pixels as you watch and essentially keeps the image moving although your eye does not detect it.

The Top 3 Problems With Plasma TVs

The third plasma TV problem that we will discuss is the heat it generates as it runs. Plasma screens often cause so much heat inside the unit that manufacturers usually install a fan to cool it down while operating. This actually works very well, but on some models the noise that the fan makes can become an annoyance. So listen for this problem carefully before you buy.

None of these problems are major enough to say that you shouldn't buy a plasma screen TV, but they should be understood beforehand so you can use the equipment properly, and choose the right plasma TV when you buy.
